Metro Ethernet and Long Reach Ethernet

Metro Ethernet is a rapidly emerging solution that defines a network infrastructure based on the Ethernet standard, as opposed to Frame Relay or ATM, which are supported over a MAN. MAN technology is extended over the enterprise WAN at Layer 2 or Layer 3.

This flexible transport architecture can include some combination of optical networking, Ethernet, and IP technologies, and these infrastructure details are transparent to the user, who sees a service at the customer edge but not the underlying technology being used.

Metro Ethernet technologies are not really visible to customers but the customer is responsible for provisioning these . . .
