Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) functions by appending a label to any type of packet. Then, the forwarding of the packet through the network infrastructure is accomplished based on this label value instead of any Layer 3 information. The labeling of the packet will provide very efficient forwarding and will make MPLS work with a wide range of underlying technologies.
