Commonly Used Default Network Ports

When configuring firewalls, it is important to understand which ports are necessary for your network to function, and which are not, in order to maintain a network infrastructure that is protected against threats. It may be useful to have the network port numbers of some of the more common networking protocols committed to memory. Each networking protocol uses either an established connection and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) or the connectionless User Datagram Protocol (UDP). This section will cover the following topics:

  • FTP
  • SFTP
  • FTPS
  • TFTP
  • TELNET
  • HTTP . . .
