Cryptography, literally, “hidden writing”, is the field concerned with encoding and decoding information, and, more generally, communications security. The ability to hide information from unauthorized viewers is vital to communications security and modern computing. This chapter will provide an overview of the concepts of modern cryptography and communications security, as well as many common methods and practices of encrypting and decrypting information.
