Enterprise WAN Design – Frame Relay

As discussed before, Frame Relay is a NBMA technology, which requires dealing with address resolution issues, except for situations in which point-to-point interfaces are used.

The local Layer 2 addresses in Frame Relay are called Data Link Connection Identifiers (DLCIs) and they are only locally significant. For example, in a hub-and-spoke environment, the hub device should have a unique DLCI to communicate to each of its spokes, as illustrated in Figure 5.5 below:
