Synchronous Optical Networking and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy
Synchronous Optical Networking (SONET) and Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) are both circuit-based technologies that deliver very high-speed service over optical networks using a ring topology. This type of topology offers fault tolerance, redundancy, and the capability of being highly available. SONET functions using the following Layer 2 technologies:

  • ATM
  • Packet over SONET (POS)

Speed measurements for SONET are offered in the form of Optical Carrier Rates. Various bandwidth measurements and standards are as follows:
