Metro Ethernet

Metro Ethernet is a rapidly emerging solution that defines a network infrastructure based on the Ethernet standard, as opposed to Frame Relay or ATM, which is supported over a MAN. Metro Ethernet extends MAN technology over to the Enterprise WAN at Layer 2 or Layer 3.
General Considerations for Metro Ethernet
This flexible transport architecture can be some combination of optical networking, Ethernet, and IP technologies, and these infrastructure details are transparent to the end-user, who sees a service at the Customer Edge but does not see the underlying technology being used.
