WAN Design Methodologies

The Enterprise Edge design process must follow the PPDIOO (Prepare, Plan, Design, Implement, Operate, Optimize) methodology described previously. The network designer should carefully analyze the following network requirements:

  • The types of applications available and their WAN requirements
  • Traffic volume
  • Traffic patterns (including possible points of congestion)

The preparing and planning phases involve analyzing the existing network to find out which technologies are currently being used for WAN, as well as the issues with those technologies, and to document the location of key hosts, servers, and network infrastructure devices.
