Carrier Sense, Multiple Access with Collision Detection
Carrier sense, multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) can be broken down as follows: Carrier sense means that the wire is listened to in order to determine whether there is a signal passing along it. A frame cannot be transmitted if the wire is in use. Multiple access simply means that more than one device is using the cables on the segment. Finally, collision detection means that the protocol is running an algorithm to determine whether the frames on the wire have become damaged due to hitting another frame. In Figure 2 . . .
