IGP – Introduction

In addition to planning, implementing and supporting routing protocols, it is also important to have a solid understanding of the route filtering capabilities supported by each protocol in Cisco IOS software. Route filtering and route redistribution, which allows different protocols to exchange routing information, are core requirements of the ROUTE exam. Route filtering and route redistribution can be used separately or in conjunction with one another.

In addition to filtering routes or allowing different routing protocols to exchange routing information, both techniques can be used for path control. It is therefore important to understand the logic behind each of these techniques and how they should be applied in a given network scenario. The core ROUTE exam objective covered in this chapter is:

  • Implement an IPv4 based redistribution solution, given a network design and a set of requirements

This chapter contains the following sections:

  • Access Lists and IP Prefix Lists Fundamentals
  • Understanding Route Maps
  • Filtering EIGRP Routes
  • Filtering OSPF Routes
  • Protocol Independent Route Filtering
  • Route Redistribution Overview
  • Configuring and Verifying Route Redistribution (Part 1)
  • Configuring and Verifying Route Redistribution (Part 2)
  • Configuring and Verifying Route Redistribution (Part 3)
  • Route Redistribution Design Considerations (Part 1)
  • Route Redistribution Design Considerations (Part 2)
