Path Control – Introduction

Path control allows administrators to control the path taken by traffic to an intended destination network. Path control can be implemented in various ways. Route optimization allows the traffic to take the best path out of the network. In Cisco IOS software, tools such as Performance Routing (PfR) provide automatic route optimization and load distribution for multiple connections between networks. These tools and more are described in detail in this chapter. The core ROUTE exam objective covered in this chapter is:

  • Implement Layer 3 Path Control Solution

This chapter contains the following sections:

  • Cisco IOS IP Service Level Agreement
  • Cisco Embedded Event Manager
  • Virtual Routing and Forwarding
  • Cisco Performance Routing
  • Path Control Using Route Redistribution
  • Cisco IOS Policy Based Routing
