iBGP and eBGP Fundamentals – Configuring and Verifying External BGP

An external BGP (eBGP) neighbor relationship is established between two routers that reside within different autonomous systems. There are two ways to configure eBGP neighbor relationships. These two methods are as follows:

  • Peer the routers using the physical interface IP addresses
  • Peer the routers using non-directly connected interfaces

The first method is the most commonly implemented method used when peering with another autonomous system. Using this method, the neighbor [address] command is used to specify the physical interface IP address of the eBGP peer.
