iBGP and eBGP Fundamentals – Enabling BGP in Cisco IOS

In Cisco IOS software, BGP routing is enabled using the router bgp [autonomous system number] global configuration command. The valid range of autonomous system numbers that can be configured is between 1 and 65,535. As was stated earlier in this chapter, BGP uses both private and public autonomous system numbers. If your enterprise does not have a public autonomous system number, i.e. a number between 1 and 64,511; you must specify and use a private autonomous system number, i.e. a number between 64,512 and 65,535.
